Disreputable asbestos contractors are telling companies that they need a certificate to prove that their premises are free of asbestos

ALLERDALE Borough Council’s Environmental Health officers are warning businesses in West Cumbria to beware of bogus asbestos contractors, following complaints received during the last week.
The Council’s officers are working with Trading Standards to tackle the scams where local businesses are contacted and told they need a certificate to prove there is no asbestos in their premises.
Rachel Horton, Environmental Health Officer, said: “Last month we had reports of the scam in Keswick. Now we have had a report from a business owner in Workington who had been contacted and told the business needed a certificate. This is not true.
We are aware of a similar scam in West Wales. If you are contacted by a company telling you that you need a certificate then contact trading standards or us for free advice. For a summary of the Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations 2002 please click here.
